Title : Ouroboros City | The Death and Rebirth of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant

Kenting, Taiwan: one can sense complexity and contradiction in such a surrealist place. Surrounded by the national park, resort, beach,  we can find the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

There are many different types of buildings; buildings which uses have been transformed with time. One can find waste stocks as palace axis, water tanks as public squares, drainages as canals, and nuclear power plants as cathedrals. It’s the Zeitgeist of contemporary civilization, after theocracy, sovereign, and democracy.

In such Post-Fukushima Era, the debate around nuclear power plants has turned into an ideology of its own. Its critique is now considered as blaspheme by most. This is how slowly, Science and the need of nuclear energy has rose above anyone’s suspicions and questions about its safety.

Maanshan’s Nuclear Power Plant is ready to decommission from its function in the near future. The vast campus, the timetable of purification, the final disposal which half-life period much longer than history of civilization. Those issues consecrate of this site to its transcendent industrial heritage.

From its beginning, the city of Ouroborous is the symbol of alchemy, the predecessor of modern science, a self-eating , self-inflicted , self-creation.

Interview

S//A : What’s the most important aspect of this project that we should be aware of?
Lu, Hao-Yeh_ The most important thing is that I tried to meticulously re-think the decommission nuclear power plant through a storytelling concept. This architecture fable story line brought me to create a fictional city and a future archeology dystopia.

S//A : What other fields outside of architecture interest you?
LHY_ Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Science Fiction.

S//A : Most important thing you learned in architecture school?
LHY_ Make sure to learn and implement a new concept or technique from each challenge. Architecture school is the best time and opportunity we have, as future architects, to challenge ourselves and explore different ideas, mediums, and representational techniques.

S//A : Describe your dream project
LHY_ If I have enough time, I’d like to further develop this project with more detailed drawings, or even turn into a movie!
