Title : Evaporative Suburbia

This thesis investigates the use of technology within sustainable systems, as a means of questioning accepted norms of single family units.

This project will critically examine currently available sustainable technologies with respect to understanding their processes as separate from their forms. By delaminating process from form opportunities will arise to exploit the scale, and the structure of ecological processes.

From an initial analysis of six sustainable technologies and their inherent processes, this thesis will focus on the process of evaporation and the production of fresh water.

The project site is located in Calabasas, California, on the edge of suburban sprawl. Taking the scale of suburban development as a departure point, the project will create a sixty-unit housing development on a 240,000 sf site, and that is symbiotically integrated into the process of salt-water evaporation and freshwater production.
Ultimately, the relationship between housing and evaporation will yield a mutually beneficial relationship, where the housing will take advantage of a variety of microclimates due to the humidity accompanying the evaporative process, while removing salt from seawater and producing valuable freshwater.
